The Hunt for Brood XI Magicicadas in New England
06/20/05 - Attention Massachusetts and Rhode Island Residents
The Hunt for Brood XI
Are you reading this web site and live in Massachusetts, Connecticut or Rhode Island? Well, I desperately need your help. Myself and a group of other Cicada enthusiasts are on the hunt for Brood XI periodical Cicadas in the in New England. The problem is, this brood was last seen in here in 1954 and is believed to be extinct.
Cicadas from this Brood and species look like the the following images:
They have black bodies, with clear wings and orange wing veins. What is most distintive about them is their red eyes. Please click on the images above for a closer look. The males make a very loud noise in the treetops.
It is believed that these great insects can be found in Massachusetts in Bristol, Franklin and Hampshire counties. In Connecticut they were seen in Hartford County, in Rhode Island they were seen in Providence (near Tiogue Reservoir).
However, if you are not from these counties and have seen these insects anyway please drop me an email as soon as humanly possible by hitting the "Email Me" link below and to the left under "Contact Me" or simply click here.
If you live in Massachusetts, Connecticut or Rhode Island, we need to know EXACTLY where it was you found them so that we can go and investigate. Now is their season and they won't be around for that much longer and if they exist it won't be for another 17 years until they make their next appearance. So if you have any information please email me.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled program and thanks for helping out.
