Above Images:Taken on Route 901 Spring Mill Road Hedgesville West Virginia on June 4th, 2004 in a small cemetery next to a church.
Top Row left to right: Some M. cassinis on a Maple Tree: A close up of a M. cassini: M. cassini using his beak on my finger to feed note the Cicada litter in the grass. I was standing approximately 20 feet away from the nearest tree; A M. cassini found in the church parking lot.
Bottom Row left to right: A lone shed nymph shell: Cicada litter concentrated around the base of a Maple tree: Close up of the same Cicada litter note the many dead and deformed Cicadas.

Above Images: A female Magicicada septendecim ovipositing on a Lilac branch.
Notes: Specimen was taken in Hedgesville West Virginia on June 5th, 2004 and was photographed in a controlled environment. Note specimen is missing a part of a mid and hind leg but the urge to oviposit is too overwhelming. Specimen supported herself up-side-down on her 4 remaining legs. Note how deep the ovipositor penetrates into the branch. See first image from left middle row. You can watch a live video of this female ovipositing on the Lilac branch on Page 3 of the Magicicada gallery.
