Cicada Journals July 24, 2004 to July 25, 2004
07/24/04 - First Cicada Exuvia Found at St. Patrick Cemetery - Lowell, MA.
7:30 pm - This is a new area after many unsuccessful hunts for Cicadas. I noticed while I was in my car a giant Red Tailed hawk swooping down low and it landed on a head stone. Man this bird is massive, I try to get close to get a decent picture but they all came out blurry. I had my camera lense set to macro so that was stupid!! I start walkinng around the cemetery.
At last, finally found my first Tibicen nymph shell of the season. That's not to say that there weren't others because obviously there were but these exuvia seem to be so illusive that they are very difficult to find. This one was found on an old maple tree that borders the many roadways inside the cemetery. I will definately have to target this area for future visits.
07/25/04 - T. lyricens Heard At Grassy Pond Convervation Area - Westford, MA.
8:30 pm - Another new area where I have heard T. lyricen calling in the trees. Heard some faint rustling sounds in the leaf litter this night. I was thinking that it may be a nymph crawling along the ground. It wasn't a nymph but I was able to find a salamander and a tree frog hopping around. Man the mosquitos are bad here!! No exuvia found. Also check out the Gypsy moth I discovered on a pine tree laying a mass of eggs.
