Report Brood XIV Periodical Cicada Sightings

Report Brood XIV Periodical Cicadas In Your Area

In order to help with distribution mapping of New England and the rest of the United States, below is a form for you to fill in to report your Brood XIV Peridocal Cicada sightings. With todays leading-edge technology and the use of the internet it is now possible to update existing distribution maps for all known broods of periodical cicadas.

I'm not from Massachusetts or New England for that Matter, Can I Still Report my Periodical Cicada Emergence?

Absolutely! Like last year, I traveled to the mid-west to study Brood XIII periodical cicadas and collected data points from several different states. You can see the result of the map I generated with just my data points if you click here. If you are not from Massachusetts you can still fill in the the form below. All data is appreciated.

The Use of GPS Coordinates and Complete Addresses.

With the use of GPS Coordinates and complete addresses, we can take this information and insert it into a database and generate an accurate distribution map very much like the one that can be found here. Even if you do not know the GPS (latitude and longitude) if you provide a complete address, these addresses can be "Geocoded" and will give us the latitude and longitude data. So please be as accurate as possible.

The Importance of Negative Records

Remember, when submitting your Brood XIV Periodical Cicada sighting reports, we would also like to include negative data as well. If you believe that back in 1991 you experienced Brood XIV in your area, it will be easy to check this against existing distribution maps. This type of data will give us indications of receding and changing boundary lines which may be caused by a myriad of things like land developement, partial extinctions in some areas, diseases and other cool and interesting stuff.

Note: For privacy concerns Email Addresses, Last Names and Street Addresses are removed for public viewing and to protect the privacy of contributors but the information is required when filling in the form.

Where was the Brood XIV Periodical Cicada(s) Sighted?

*Town:

Good Examples: "76 Elm st." or "Intersection of Poplar st. and Elm st."

Bad Examples: "Elm Street" or "500 feet north of Poplar Behind Liquor Store"

Note: If the street address does not adhere to the above good examples ie; if you list only a street with no number, then this will not work for geocoding purposes. It is taking a long time to chase down individuals who supply an improper street address of their sighting. If you are unwilling to do so, please reconsider filling out the form.
