July 21, 2007 - Tibicen chloromera in Connecticut
As I do every year, today, I went to Connecticut to check out areas where last year and the year before, I have heard T. chloromera in areas of Connecticut where they just shouldn't be. I must've gone too early because while I heard some in the areas that I frequent, I just wasn't hearing the numbers like last year. I will definately have to go back a few more times before I give my final report for this year.
T. canicularis Female Found While Eclosing - Suffield CT
One of the places I frequent is a cemetery on Hill Street in Suffield, CT. Today as I was walking around, I found a T. canicularis female just completing the eclose process. It was around 12:30 pm. See if you're determined, you can find cicadas molting during all times of the day. So in the end, this trip really wasn't wasted. I already had two species of Cicadas from Connecticut, one T. lyricen and one T. chloromera now I can add a third, T. canicularis. Of course, Connecticut still has other species as well. There are T. auletes, T. linnei, O. rimosa and Periodical Cicadas and I'm sure there are more. I'd love to get a few specimens of those as well :)
Cicadas from Western United States
As previously posted in an earlier update, I promised to post some close up photos of some cicadas that my friend and colleague Tim McNary sent to me from out west. Pretty much all of these can be found in the western part of the US so I thought it would be cool for others in the east to see what other genera of cicadas look like since we mostly have Tibicens here. Just click the thumbnails for an enlarged view.

These next two specimens while not known to be in New England, were given by Professor Chuck Holliday of Lafayette University in Pennsylvania. I help Chuck out with his work on Cicada Killers. These two specimens I believe were brought in by Cicada Killer females.
