Morphologies in Tibicen canicularis Cicada Species

Introduction and Objective of this Page

Before we get started, you should familiarize yourself with some terms that we will be using.

Pronotum - Part of the area behind the two big compound eyes that along with the mesonotum make up the thorax.

Pronotal Collar - thin band approximately 2 mm wide (1/16th of an inch) located just below the pronotum and divides the pronotum and mesonotum.

Mesonotum - Area below the pronotal collar but above the abdomen. Front forewing hinges are located against the mesonotum.

Female Example 1:

Pronotum - Outer areas black changing to dark green towards the center. A distinct triangle is located medially with a bright green "exclamation point" within the triangle.

Pronotal Collar - Outer areas have a silvery pubescence changing to dark green medially. A thin black line is located directly on the pronotal collar's top edge where it meets the pronotum.

Mesonotum - Black with dark brown patches to left and right above wing hinges. A green to orange pattern is located medially with a distinct orange "McDonalds Arches" pattern.

Note: A silvery pubescence is noted on areas of the abdomen and mesonotum.

About Specimen - Specimen was collected at a Cemetery (name unknown) in Sturbridge on Route 20 east no 8/18/05. Specimen could not fly and was found on the ground.

Male Example 1:

Pronotum - Outer areas very black fading to brown then green towards the center. A thin black line runs across the bottom of the pronotum just above the pronotal collar. A distinct triangular outline is located medially with a green "exclamation point" located within.

Pronotal Collar - Outer edges of pronotal collar are green. Top most edge of pronotal collar next to pronotum is black with remainder of pronotal collar being brown.

Mesonotum - Very light brown patches located to left and right above wing hinges. Green to orange pattern located medially with orange "McDonalds Arches" very distinct.

About Specimen - Specimen was collected at Fairview Cemetery, Westford, Ma. in the evening of 07/21/05.

Male Example 2:

Pronotum - Outer areas very black fading to brown towards the center. A thin black line runs across the bottom of the ronotum just above the pronotal collar. A distinct triangular outline is located medially with a brown "exclamation point" located within.

Pronotal Collar - Outer edges of pronotcal collar are brown. Top most edge of pronotal colar next to pronotum is black with remainder of pronotal coller being brown.

Mesonotum - Small orange-brown patches located to left and right above wing hinges. Light greenish brown design located medially. "McDonalds Arches" not distinct.

About Specimen - Specimen was collected at Fairview Cemetery, Westford, Ma. in the evening of 07/21/05.

Male Example 3:

Pronotum - Outer edges have a gold pubescense changing to black then greenish brown towards the middle. Distinct black triangular outline located medially with green exclamation point within.

Pronotal Collar - Outer edges have gold pubescense changing to brown with a thin black line approx 1/2 mm at edge of pronotal collar located medially.

Mesonotum - Outer edges above wing hings is mottled with a gold pubescence then small tiny brown patches located to left and right. A distinct green to orange pattern located medially with "McDonalds Arches" distinct.

About Specimen - Specimen was collected from Pine Grove Cemetery, Westford, Ma. on 07/28/05. Specimen was stung by female Cicada Killer and while alive, is totally paralyzed. Specimen was then donated to Dr. Chuck Holliday's Cicada Killers web site.

Male Example 4:

Pronotum - Brown with a silvery pubescense at outer edges. Distinct triangular shape located medially with a green diamond shape located within triangle.

Pronotal Collar - Outer areas light green with a silvery pubescense changing to brown with a thin black line aprox 1/2 mm at edge of pronotal collar located medially.

Mesonotum - Very distinct greent to brown patches located to left and right above wing hinges. Green to orange pattern located medially with "McDonalds Arches" very distinct in this specimen.

Note: No noticeable pruinosity ventrally on this specimen.

About Specimen - Specimen was collected from Pine Grove Cemetery, Westford, Ma. on 07/29/05. Specimen was stung by female Cicada Killer and was still teneral, and while alive, is totally paralyzed. Specimen was then donated to Dr. Chuck Holliday's Cicada Killers web site.

Male Example 5:

Pronotum - Brown with a silvery pubescense at outer edges. Distinct triangular shape located medially with a brown rectangular shape located within triangle.

Pronotal Collar - A silvery pubescense at outer edges to light green medially.

Mesonotum - Small but distinctly brown patches located located to left and right of mesonotum above wing hinges. Heavy green to orange pattern located medially with "McDonalds Arches" very distinct in this specimen.

About Specimen - Specimen was collected from Hazardville Cemetery, Hazardville Connecticut on 08/13/05 during the eclose process.
