He's Huge, He's Loud, and He's The KING !
Zoids King Gojulas made by Tomy of Japan has to be the largest and best of the Zoids line ever made. This very rare and extremely hard to find Zoid was made in 1989.
King Gojulas was never released here in the U.S.A. but through a few good dealers you could order one direct from Japan back then. I had ordered King Gojulas along with Gilvader, Gunguyardos and the original Iron Kong MK II and got them all in one shot. I had seen King Gojulas in a Hobby Book from Japan and loved what was displayed in those pages of the book.
When I got the items I could not believe the size of the box alone. It measured 21" in height x 14" in width X 9 in depth. I didn't know that the box would be this big when I ordered the item. Once seeing it I was surprised and could only imagine the size of King G. himself once put together. I was always used to putting together Zoids units of smaller sizes, so this one was a definite surprise for me.
What can I say about this Zoid and possibly the greatest Zoid of all time? His pieces are huge and chunky. The sprues were the same size as the box. You felt as though you were really putting together a mechanical unit. Once you start putting the King together you can easily see that he is not a small toy. Each foot alone measures a whopping 5 and 1/2 inches x 5 and 1/2 inches. His tail is almost 15 inches. He is almost 17 inches tall from floor to the top of his red antenna fin and 32 inches from red fin to the tail.
King G. Walks, Opens his arms "in a Godzilla like motion" and let's out a huge roar. My mistake when testing his functions was that I put in the batteries and hit his "on" switch at 3am in the morning. I was in shock by how loud he was and waking up half of the household. It was darn well worth it though! There are three spinning vulcan cannon guns on his chest and the inner vents on his armor light up in red. There are two "on" switches on King G's back. The upper switch is for the lighting system and the bottom switch which is the last fin on his back is for the movement mechanics and the sound.
I have had King G. ever since in perfect condition both toy and box along with his manual. Without a doubt, he is one my two favorites of all the Zoids next to Gilvader. I will soon do a review as well for Gilvader as he is also extremely rare. The pictures I have posted along with this review show the manuals and catalogs that came with King G. In the catalog you can see Gilvader the Dragon and Gunguyardos, a smaller dragon unit.
Also, the famous Oberon is shown. He is the mechanical unicorn Zoid. For all of you fellow Zoids builders out there, keep on building and hoping for cooler designs to come along! I'll see you next time with a review of Gilvader.
